final title sequence

music

The music we mainly chose to use was from sound effects cd,s , to fit into our genre of film ( thriller) we needed to find music which would maintain suspense but still create an atmosphere , after looking through some more music tracks we finally found a slow ghostly music track which we decided to use for our titles and for the end part of our scene , whiles building up the action with a more up- tempo track during our first scene. It was very important for us to choose the right music that would match each scene since we only had one line of dialogue throughout our film.

shooting day adjustments

14/10/09
During our filming, due to problems we worked to overcome, we couldn't follow the guideline of our shooting schedule. We started as we meant to go on shooting Scenes 2 & 5 first, however when we came to shoot Scene 1, the science lab had been overbooked therefore we has unable to film there. Instead we skipped to filming Scene 4 and used the afternoon to shoot Scene 1 in another science lab which we found was free. As we was unable to finish shooting Scene 1 this had to be finished on our second shooting day.

15/10/09
On our second day of filming we started by shooting our flashback scenes. We started with the areas of the school which got busier during the day as this was shot before school hours. As the assistant director I checked the different flashback locations before me and the crew moved to them, and chose the most appropriate place to shoot the next flashback. As we were only given an hour during second period to use the science lab again we had to finish filming Scene 1 in between our flashback shots.
Once we finished shooting all our scenes, we decided we had to reshoot Scene 2, as we needed to use a newspaper to reveal the headline of two school children dying. Therefore we re-shot this scene on the afternoon of our final shooting day.

cast details

Finding cast is a important part of our pre production planning as we need to make sure the actors we cast display the personalites of our characters effectively. Therefore we thought it would be best to hold auditions to find the best suited actors, and then rehearsals running up to the filming. So far, we have asked the drama teachers to make announcements to their year 13 and 12 pupils, as a maturer cast is needed for our film due to the sexual implications. They have passed on the message to let any members of our group know we need efficient, reliable and skilled students to act on Alfies, Maries and Johnny's role. We have also made announcements in the common room and put up notices on the common room notice board to both year 12 and 13 students to ask anyone if they would be interested in playing the

casting

As we had minimum response from the drama department and sixth form notice, we then has to cast year 10 students who were willing to help us. As we know the importance of casting to our film, and ensuring their reliablity, we cast students who knew of, including my own brother! To confirm we would definatly be able to use these students in our film, and take them off timetable for 2 days, we had to inform their head of year. We also got a copy of their time tables so we could inform their subject teachers to set them any work which would be missed.

story board feedback and draft 2

After recieving feedback from out first storyboard draft we learned our main problem was that we needed to include more cut a way shots. We learned that this was especially the case with Alfie's character in Scene 1. More shots of Alfie pouring petrol would be neccessary and then switching inbetween shots of Marie And Johnny getting closer to the action.
Therefore only two more storyboard sheets needed to be added before we had our final draft.we also included a few more shots during scene 3 and scene 4 to represent the action in the flashbacks happening over time and how the rleationship between marie and alfie.

rehearsals

On Monday 12th October, our first official rehearsal was held. However it was then when Emine Hassan, our Marie character, decided she did not want to play our part. Aswell as this problem, our main character played by Danny Martin also fell ill! As the main character is my brother, lucky enough I was able to rehearse his scenes and lines with him at home! Therefore this rehearsal consisted of running Kieran Roberts, Johnny's character, through his scenes. It was then we was able to cast Georgia Jones, a year 13 student to play our character of Marie as she was willing to help.
On Tuesday 13th October, (yes the day before filming!), we had our final rehearsal with Johnny and Marie's character. However as Alfie was still ill, he was unable to attend any rehearsals.

film review draft 2

After having a class dicussion regarding our magazine reviews, there was some feedback I collected. From this feedback I learned that I needed to shrink the size of the images and focusing on adding more text onto the review. I decided it would be beneficial to create my review on Adobe Photoshop compared to the Microsoft Publisher software, as it looked more professional in this format.

film review draft 1 cand feedback

When I showed this review to my class and teachers for feedback these are the comments I recieved:

- Make our own films the main focus, yet add other films into the review to make it look like an actual magazine review page!

- Give the magazine a specific house style to suit a chosen magazine.

- The page will suit a magazine such as Empire.

- The images work well and it does look like an actual review.

From this feedback I decided to place my magazine into a review page such as Independant Critics.

Q4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Throughout all the stages of making our final product , we used different technology to help us develop our ideas to achieve this final film. First of all to carry out our research for ideas we would include in our film , we used the internet such as different websites for example google , BBC , film sites to help us gather images , typography and look at how to market films. We also used youtube , to look at different examples of short films and what techniques could ahve been used to help put together their title sequences , one example we looked at was saul bass work for the numerous films he has been part of creating credits for such as west side story and casino. We also looked at how dialogue may have been included or kept to a minumim in some short films , we looked st films which were made independently as well. In our research youtube was very helpful in giving us easy access to different variety of choices when we it came to looking at films or research into how sound is used within a film. Microsoft powerpoint and word , was also some of the technology we used to create our poster scrapbooks, or slideshows on some of planning stages for our final film for example , our pitch and feedback. Our blogs were also a big part of the technology we used that helped us within our research and planning stages , we used the blogs to look at other ideas and formats on similar blogs. Also what techniques or what websites they used to help them find the extra parts for their film ( music , images , typography).the next stage where technology was used to help the development of our film was planning , for our storyboard we used a digitalcamera to take still shots and then upoloaded them and created a storyboard on word , we also scanned in our drawn storyboard and our individual pictures we had for ideas for our poster .
To help us with the next stage of our development of our film , we attended workshops on how camera and sound can be used in films to create an atmosphere and a mood we also learnt editing techniques which helped us in our production stage. This year we used Adobe premiere to help edit our films, this enabled us to manage it easier and to have a more wider range to add effects or incorparate other details into our film.Adobe also helped us capture our rushes from the camera onto our lacie drive and place onto a timeline. Some of the equipment we used also helped benefit us , such as the camera, this enabled the group to shoot using different range of camera angles and movement that suited the genre of our film and produced best quality.these where the basic steps we took when using
Images is not the only important part within a film , sound also has a vital role and the two must play alongside one another to produce something good , we therefore had to make sure we used different technology to help us capture and create correct sound that matched within our genre of film such as the sound boom we used to capture natural sound whiles using sound effects cd's to choose music tracks and effects to use in the background of our film in some scenes. In order for a product to have the best and most efficent quality , using a combination of new technologies can help achieve this successfully as they all help offer towards the development of our film.

Q3. At every stage of development what feedback did you receive ?

At every stage of our planning for our film we received feedback that helped us be able to learn and improve our developmental ideas for each process. during pre production, We had to pitch our film idea we created from our colour we was given ( which was red) to our class we received feedback on how we were going to show certain themes within our film and how we going to develop the characters. some of the questions asked was how our theme colour red was going to be ahown in our storyline, we learnt we had to include ideas which related to this and we went away and drew up a mind map of all the themes which related to the colour red and then included in our storyline how we could show this for example we symbolised passion through the relationship between Johnny and Marie and also showed revenge through the murder the main character Alfie carries out on the other characters.During our feedback we was also reminded how our characters would develop throughout our story, we learnt that all successful films or stories always contain a characters development or background story, we then went away and added more of a background story towards Alfie’s character, he is not seen until the end but he develops through the story as a jealous boyfriend who then lets his obsession and anger cause him to seek revenge. Nearer the ending of the story he becomes remorseful and regrets his action. His character builds up throughout the story. In our pitch we had not fully explained how we would show the audience how Alfie's character would find out about the the secret love fling. We went away and thought of a way we could show this without making the film seem to simple, we came up with including a series of flashbacks during the middle of the film we will show everything from Alfie’s point of view, which will allow the audience to see when he saw the other two characters together, how he decided what to do and how he carried out the fire. We will show this through fast paced cut shots to give the audience a glimpse into how it all happened.
Another question that was asked was is there enough dialogue between the characters to show scene progressing and action taking place to improve our film we decided that the story does’t have to include to much dialogue , but whiles Marie and Johnny are in the science lab there will be dialogue to let audience know what is taking place and how scene progresses.
The next stage of our pre- production was our script, we had to make many changes towards the script before it became finalised,we received feedback on our script which caused us to make changes four times. The first feedback we received was that there was too much dialogue and not enough visual included , we therefore had to cut down and exclude some of our dialogue and include more action into the script. To help us with cutting down the dialogue out of scene 4 as well we carried out research into different short films to see how they used camera movement to show the action taking place in the scene , after this research we decided to just keep playing around with where we needed to keep significant dialogue in which scenes where it was needed. We achieved this in our 3rd draft of our script where was became finally happy with the amount of dialogue and action included. After receiving the next bit of feedback on our script we decided we would remove the voice over we was going to use in scene 3 and replace it with a opening shot of our main character Alfie sitting on a bench reading a newspaper which included the updated news story of the action which took place in the scene. This seemed more approiate to use as it would create suspense and made use of a different kind of prop which smartly helped audience interact further with the film.
our next bit of feedback we received was on our world of film mood board, we received this feedback from those in our target audience so this was very useful to help us learn and improve our ideas, to help create our mood board we used many celebrity images and used a lot of images which didn't display the key themes within our story , we were told that when our moodbaord was viewed the images and typography didn't explain our story fully , we therefore went away and started a new mood board which included more images which represented our main character, such as dark images that symbolised his family background or troubled past for example ( bottle of alcohol.
Our final stage of pre-production was our storyboarding ,this had to be changed two or three times , because we needed to include cutaway shots.
The next bit of feedback which was important for us to include to help develop our film ,was the post-production stage this was when we came to editing ,we had to over a period of time put a rough cut of our shots onto our timeline and receive feedback from teachers and other students on the process of our film and what could be improved on our film. Some of the feedback we received was that first of all the music we used at beginning of the first scene should be used to fade out quietly when dialogue between characters starts and keep on playing the music in the background. To achieve this we had to include time frames at certain points in the sound track of where we wanted it to become quieter.Another change we had to make was when johnny characters was walking towards the classroom door in scene 1,do not use too many extra shots , we therefore had to go back through out selection of rushes and include two good shots of him making his journey form the table towards the door which ended up making the scene look much more cleaner and straightforward.
During the flashback in scene 3, we had to get rid of the panning shot from feet upwards of Alfie character on the staircase, because it took too long to reveal. his
Nearer the end of the film extend last few shots in scene 5, so there is constant flow so it shows the character Alfie like he is constantly thinking at the end of film.We made these changes by overlapping different shots we had from scene 5 and adding and additive dissolve into one another to create that illusion of time was passing by this added more effect into the movie.Whiles editing our film we was told that we should not include scene 4 into the film because the dialogue was not entirely good in those shots and scene 3 already told the story of the flashbacks and represent the relationship between the characters, it also showed how over time the mian charcter character had been watching the other two characters and what hsi motivation was for his actions.
When we researched into the right music to pick out and use for our film , we looked at research into other films which matched with our genre of film and saw that it was important to include music that helped build up tension this is what we did during scene 2 where we extended the sound track we used for much longer.
Our final bit of feedback on our editing of our film , was that the flashback scene we included was i really good , effects used add realism to it and music added as well addes tension. After we completed all these changes we then moved on to producing our film posters, review and title sequences , feedback was given which then helped us recreate ideas that helped us develop them into our final products.
After completing our film and both ancilliary tasks we showed our film to the rest of the students in our class and they gave us positive feedback on our film , they thought flashback scene was very interesting and the use of effects added realism to the scene.

Q2. how effetive is the combination of your main product and ancilliary texts ?

Q2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
To be able to market our film correctly and know how to appeal to the right audience, we created a film poster and film magazine review. Our poster had to be able to share similarities with our genre of film. We carried out research on different thriller film posters to see the font, composition, colours and images they included and created a scrapbook of ideas to develop our final poster for our film. From my research I noticed that thriller film posters show almost a glimpse of the storyline including maybe the villain and the innocent characters. They also include key symbols from the film, which prepares the audience for what the storyline may be and attracts an audience further in; this is what we carried in the development of our poster. We showed the main character who is the villain in the foreground this signifies his importance and lets audience make they’re own judgements about his personality before film. We also included the setting of our film in the background, which was part of the school corridor; this relates to where the action may happen mostly in the film or just let the audience know more knowledge about the film. The font we chose to use for our film gave the sense of mystery and something dangerous, we wanted to able to draw in an audience through the tagline we created . The tagline leaves questions unanswered and plays a pun into our title for film.
The first part of your film that may be seen is the title sequence, when carrying out research on different title sequences, we realised that the title sequence is what makes your film watchable. The title sequence must reflect your films key themes or ideas whiles still maintaining an interesting concept which keeps your audience drawn or hooked into your film. When creating ideas for our title sequence we took key ideas that we had seen for other movies, such as THE WEST SIDE STORY, we used a brick wall as our background image for the title sequence this wall not only symbolized the setting of the film but also the strength and closure of the main character alfie’s personality. The font we used for the titles we wanted to keep simple and bold, as we wanted to match typical titles that your would see in a film. The camera movement was a slow zoom into the brick wall whiles moving credits would pass the camera; this created the effect of the audience moving closer towards the wall as if they were getting deeper into the film. Our final title that appears written on the wall in blood, gives the audience a sense of what may happen in the film that maybe murder may take place or something horrible may take place later on in the movie. The music we chose to include was also used towards the end of our film , it was slow paced and created a chilling spooky effect which symbolised that something dangerous or evil may happen in our film . The music chose also matched within our genre of film , when carrying out research on different thriller films , i noticed that many of them included either slow paced music or fast up tempo tracks with a strong background beat. Therefore because we included murder and jeaoulousy within our film we wanted the music and the title sequence not only to grip the audience further in but to show the loneliness of the character and the emptiness of the film.Through carrying out research into different film magazines we thought that independent critics who appeal to a wide range of audiences would work effectively in being able to promote and sell our film.Example of films independant critics has featured are saw to wallace and gromit , because our film is an independent film we thought including it into independent critics would be a good way to market our film
As Independant Critics has a wide target audience we thought this works effectively alsongside our main product. Independant Critics features a variety of different reviews, from Saw to Wallace & Gromit, therefore we are aware it is read by a wide varied audience. Therefore as an independant film we thought this would be a good idea to include our film in this magazine which would appeal towards our target audience .

poster feedback

In order to find out how to make our film poster the most successful it could be we decided to get feedback from our class, to see what they thought of our ideas for the poster and what else we can add them. After the discussion these are the idea's we retrieved:

- Using dark, grey, colours keeping the images very minimalistic.

- A dark figure of the physco leaning against a wall, at an angle, yet not revealing his face. In the foreground you can have two lovers enjoying themselves as the figure in background is watching on.

- An eye looking at two lovers, who are clearly panicing and frightened.

- In a corridor with a black silhouette, and the wall has red writing saying "pyhsco".

- A hole in the wall, with an eye looking through it watching onto Johnny & Marie's characters flirting.

- Incorporate newspaper or newspaper font from our newspaper all over the poster.

- A triangle of light beaming down revealing the couple in the spotlight, yet in the background. Alfie is in the foreground looking menacing in black with his hood up.

- Half of Alfie's face blacked out with light shining on the other half.

- Alfie walking down the corridor looking powerful and the couple in the background looking scared.

- Marie holding hands with Alfie looking back over her shoulder down the corridor at Johhny.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our film ‘I.C.U’ is based on the genre of thriller and mystery, throughout our film we used key themes which are typically shown in our genre of film , some of these themes are revenge , betrayal , passion , love and jealously. Throughout our film you can see the theme revenge through the main character alfie’s plotting and scheming against the relationship between Johnny and marie, this is shown from the opening shot of alfie in a classroom pouring petrol all over the room, it then later on shows in a series of flashbacks of alfie watching Johnny and marie whiles continuously planning his revenge. Another one of our themes passion and love is shown in our film through the body language of Johnny and Marie characters, throughout our film the audience is able to see the relationship the characters share through their flirting with one another. Our film follows the conventions of a typical thriller film it does this through, showing small parts of the storyline and later then adding in twist which creates suspense, also through our characters such as having a typical villain who is evil and shares a lot of hatred, also innocent characters who are unaware of their fate later on in the film. example of this can be shown through the emotion and feelings the main character alfie shows towards the other characters Johnny and maries relationship, he feels betrayed , a similarity within the film (obsessed shows where a couple’s relationship is threatened by the jealously of a co –worker this later then leads to murder.)
our sound we chose to use also showed the codes and conventions of a thriller teen movie , we included a slow paced music track during the first scene , although it included int he background a small hint of a drum being played , this built up tension and gripped the audience into the film straight away throughout the scene and added suspense and mystery.
some of the ways our film challenged the typical codes and conventions of our genre of ahve film , was the fact that we included a romantic aspect into a thriller film, not many films have main storylines are based on a love triangle we were able to show this in our film through the different camera shots and body language of johnny and marie which reprsented their relationship with one another , this is also seen int he tv series gossip girl where one of the main charcters blair is secretly falling in love with another man whils still having a boyfriend which leads to jealously and betrayal. Our media product was able to develop conventions of a typical thriller film ,as seen in short films that share simialr genre of film , there is always a psycho who is used in films such as “Scream”, “Waz” and even the character Sam in Kidult/Adulthood. Marie's character is also stereo typically shown as the innocent damsel in distress , her charcter is not soemthign that would be typically shown as the main focus in a thriller film , this can show how our media product challenged typical stereotype of a female character.
the setting we used in our short film helped create the atmospehere for a thriller film , we used dark or abandon school corridors and made use of science classrooms to fit in within our storyline of a accident happening in a school , although we challenged the codes and conventions through shooting some of our scenes during daylight ,this is not typically seen in thriller films , especially the scene's which are dramtaic and build up tension for example seen in movies such as 'prom night and dark knight'

In order to get some ideas for our own title sequences, we looked at the work of Saul Bass. From analysing many of the opening title sequences he has created we were able to take away many possible title ideas for our own film.

title sequence research - casino

In the title sequence of Casino, the first shots are kept very simple to contrast with the car bomb exploding, creating maximum "shock factor" for the audience. Fire takes over the screen with the character falling across the screen and then the shot then trnasforms into the crimson lights of the Las Vegas Strip. Flames shoot up from the bottom of the frame, showing a screen covered with abstract shots of iconic Las Vegas signage and illumination. This vision of hell created by Bass describes the narrative ahead, without ruining any of the surprises the film has in store for the audience. The combination of image and sound allows the viewer to be aware of the genre and themes in the film : Las Vegas as the most tempting hell on Earth.
As fire plays an important concept in our film, the Casino title sequence had a specific relevance. An idea we came up with was to incorporate the fire explosion transition, after the lighter is sparked in our film during scene 1. I thought at this dramatic point of the title sequence it would be the perfect time to display the film's title most likely light up in golden writing to show the typography as being inflamed. However, as we were limited to the editing software we are currently using , we learned that it would be difficult to create this effect especially within our time frame we were given.

Sunday 22 November 2009

title sequencce research -

another idea we came up with for our title sequence , is using a key symbol from our film as main object in titles. We pictured having a black screen with a long shot of someone holding a lighter in their arms the character strikes the lighter 3 times each time the camera zooms in further on the 3rd strike a explosion of fire comes out of the lighter and spells the main title of film , each shot can have image of each cast or crew members name being written in a golden flame border around the typography whiles each title comes out with ball of fire from the lighter. The use of the fire will keep the audience gripped and guessing it allows them to get an idea of what the film may include but doesnt let them know the story. the fast shots used will create intensity and create thriller / suspenseful mood , meetin genre of the film . Keeping the blackground black and writing only being lighted slighty suggests darkness and loneliness. our ideas was taken from a few different film opening sequences such as casino where robert de niro character appraoaches a car whiles it blows up in a explosion of fire , titles then appear on screen with the fire in background , this is used to represent the evil of the character maybe the events that may take place in the film and almost the sense of him continously falling down towards hell.

title sequence research - west side story

These images are taken from the film west side story these are the closing credits , I chose this title sequence because of the similaraties it shares towards our ideas for our final title sequence. The sequence starts of with a brick wall which contains graffiti on it, the graffiti used represents towards the audience the run down setting for the film and also a reflection maybe into the characters lifes. In huge bold letters the title is almost faded on the brick wall in the back whiles each title of cast or crew appears onto the wall in different postions and different sizes. The camera is used to pan and zoom into the wall , creating this confusing effect for the audience, we liked this idea and therefore chose to use the camera slowly zooming towards our credits which created suspense and mystery. I liked this idea of using a brick wall for our title sequence as the background because it represents not only the setting for the film but almost the lifestyle of the character. The use of graffiti on the wall never appealed to me at first , but after analysing the title sequence , i felt that because our film is a thriller , we could maybe include scrambled words all over the brick wall to create confusion for the audience's perceptions but also to represent the scrabbled images or confusion that may be included in the film such as film starting from end and returning to the beginning. We also developed the idea of having main titles or credits of cast and crew appear on the wall written in red bold typography as if the main character is writing these words on the wall in blood, this idea would immediately let audience know the genre of our movie and what the story may be based around without giving away the twists and turns in the movie which meets all the conventions of a thriller which creates suspense for the audience.

the importance of title sequences

A title sequence is the first thing that your audience see and relate to therefore it can allow them to create their perception of the film before the actucal film starts. the first few minutes of your film can create the mood for your audience , whether it excites them or makes them feel scared , your title sequence must grip and draw your audience into knowing and wanting to watch more of your film. when producing a title sequence , creativity and thought must go into what message you want to portray through their first few minutes of your film. as some title sequences are made to match the action and almost give taster or peek at what may be included in film , some tell the story of the film and some contain almost opposite action to what may take place in the rest of your film , this can be used to confuse audience and suprise them without giving story away
A good title sequence must share many qualities such as being original in a way that it is either daring or challenging also they must tell a story no matter whether they are simple or artistically abstract.
It must also be a visually unique and show core theme of story without revealing to much.
depending on the look of your film , typography may play a big role in your title sequence, some may choose to use words and lettering to tell story of film or typography may just be used on the side as less of focus compared to the illustration.
Title sequences are the moments during watching a film , that allows the audience to create what mood they choose to share whiles watching a film , for example if a title sequence for a action/thriller is boring maybe may contain basic classical music and simple typography this will give the audience the impression that the what follows on from the title sequence may also be boring. the importance of using and displaying creative ideas is vital to creating an effective title sequence , ideas which are memorable and different may play around with audience perceptions of film , and grip them into watching more. no matter how simple title sequence may be , creativity can still be shown .

feedback on editing film

during whiles our group was editing we got some of the other students and teachers in our class to give us feedback on what we could improve in our film.
. The music we used at beginning of first scene should be used to fade out quietly when dialogue between characters starts and keep in the background .
. when johnny characters walking towards the classroom door in scene 1,do not use too many extra shots , just keep two man shots of him wlaking directly towards the door.
.during the flashback in scene 3, get rid of the panning shot from feet upwards of alfie character on the staircase, it takes to too long to reveal his face.
.during scene 1 , of alfie puttig key into door cut the shot in half to make shorter.
. extend last few shots scene 5, so there is constant flow like constantly thinking at the end of film.
.add in an erxplosion sound when in scene 1 lighter is used to create fire , this will create more effect and make action more significant.
.the ambulance sirens should continue on for longer period of time until in scene 2 when character sitting on bench starts tapping foot.
.Either take out in scene 1 second flirty scene or create a sound or add in another shot for character to react to .
.do not include scene 4 shots , dialogue was not entirely good in those shots and also scene 3 tells story already.
.extend music in scene 2 for much longer , because helps build up tension in the scene.
. flashback scene is really good , effects used add realism to it and music added as well addes tension.

the shooting schedule was used to help us plan out what order we were going to shoot and to plan our time effectively, we were able to plan over the two days of filming what shots we could get in one day and then be able to complete our other shots the next day depending on what locations would be avaible to use. although we dealt with some problems with our location being booked over when we was suppose to use it , and so we had to chnage our shooting schedule around.

this is the call sheet of all our details and the cast details , which was then handed out to all cast and crew. the need of a call sheet is for everybody in the crew to be able to make contact with the cast and vice-versa , it helps with preparation.

poster research : batman darknight

Film posters are not only seen as advertisment for a film , but also a visual representation of the film itself. A poster shows the mood, genre, setting etc all through the layout and presentation.
Batman is not only a film that i enjoyed watching but also used it artistic posters to help audience have visualised image of film before watching it. The posters all do not all have a specific colour used although the background images, are made to to look dark and mysterious which straight away lets you know the genre of the film as maybe being action or thriller. Symbols which are used in 2 of the posters is the big, tall lit up buildings in the background , these show that the film could be set in well built up city or town , somewhere that is wealthy and populated or is not remote and far out. This image also can show the link between the film being centred around the town as well , in both posters you can see both characters either walking away or running towards the city which can show that the main focus is on the town. In both posters the figures are almost shown photgraphically opposite to one another, in the first poster the main figure is centered in the middle of the frame , his mise en scene is bright coloured clothing e.g purple jacket and green hair and he carries a gun in his hand , this all represents this character as a wild different spotanteous character through his clothing , also shows that he is violent and is one of the main characters. The fact that he is in the centre of the fame shows his imporatnce and his isolation from the city.In the second poster the main figure is all blacked out in a Cape and mask , this represents is trying to hide his identity and is wearing typical costume that a hero might wear.Although the fact that is all blacked out , is not typical image of hero and maybe shows his personality as having a darker side.

cast

In the pre production stage, we need to plan to fidn the right cast that would be suitable not only for our film but that would be able to potray our film well . the actors we choose as our cast must display the personalites of our characters effectively. We have also made announcements in the common room and put up notices on the common room notice board to both year 12 and 13 students to ask anyone if they would be interested in playing the roles.

collage of the world of my film

we created this moodboard/collage of loads of cutouts and different texts that we thought represent and showed how our film should be shown or portrayed , we looked at each character and their persoanlities and their likes and their look , for example at the top we took of cheryl cole who not only represents a pretty young female like our character marie but also because she was cheated on and betrayed whish is seen in alfies character , it also relates to the love affair in our story. we used lots of bold text from magazines and newspapers that quoted words like : heartbreak, secret, love , attraction not only did these words link in with our theme colour of red but where words that explained what the story line was about and contained. we see it as an love affair between marie and johnny that is a kept secret but causes heartbreak towards one of the characters ( alfie) , we wanted the audience to know what our film is going to be about ( love affair, betrayal) through the words we used. we also chose pictures of certain objects (props) that will be in the film that play key role like maries bag and her phone where the message is shown which alfie then sees and get jealous.there where many pictures included of couples , some looking in love and happy together which represented the affair and relationship between johnny and marie , and let audience know they're is a love aspect into the film not just all thriller, but we also showed happy families which portrayed the idea or fantasy marie wanted to have in the future and this said more about her background and kind of character she is (likes to feel secure and wants to be happy).we also showed pictures of couples who may have been arguing or upset to represent marie and alfie's relation which is contrast to relationship marie shares with johnny. to represent alfie's character we included a picture of chris brown ( been recently in media for abuse to girlfriend) and included words of abuse and other words around to show the different aspects we are including in our film to not make it seem like a typical love story.our moodboard was used to show our world of our film , through the characters : creating looks and personalities and interests of each character allows us to see the motivation and reasons for their actions in our story , and when the audience are able to understand the characters they are able to understand and visualise the storyline , i feel our story is more based aroudn the characters , who they are and why they have done this throughout the story. We included a bottle of alcohol to show alfies past with hsi father , the kind of background and home he came from and give an deeper insight into why he is so obessive and over-protective now.The voodoo doll is sometimes seen as a typical prop in a thriller/horror genre and also the image of fire suggests our colour and also our key theme in the story.we also included images of taylor swift looking dressed up in ball gowns and thought that this coudl represent marie's interest in fashion whiles in contrast the picture of lap dancing would show johnny's flirtatious side and womanising side.
we wanted out film to be suspenseful and have a thriller theme , it was able to draw the audience in and keep them guessing , slowly building up to the main plot twist ,almost letting the audience get drawn into the action taking place and we thought of albert hitchock style of film and so thats why we included him .Alfred Hitchcock is probably a big inspiration to the world of our film as his movies focused on the thriller genre. He uses pace to build suspense such as the “Physco” shower scene, and we feel pace could help us create suspense and tension in the audience in our film.

writing short films

over the years short-films have become a new style and a very effective one infact it has made way for new directors such as shane meadows and Lynne Ramsey .
One of the features of short film making in the UK has been the steady rise of story-driven narratives, and the increasing attention placed on the screenplay. At the heart of all the short films in this collection is a character's story, which is first fully realised in a screenplay.
i noted some basic tips to consider when writing or creating a short film, there are six questions you should keep in mind.
Who is the protagonist?
•What is the active question, which is the basis of the action in film?
•Who or what opposes the protagonist?
•From whose point of view is the audience being shown the story?
•What is it about? or, What is the theme?
•What is the style of the film?
estions that should be kept in mind

cinematography

Cinematography is the art of positioning a camera and lighting a scene. Its like using different components like ur camera and lighting to dress up your film. a cinematogrpaher's role is just as important as the director's , because they have the responsbility of being able to portray what their idea of their film is , and allowing the audience to visualise this idea themselves.after watching the masterclass of christopher doyle and cinematrography , i was able to learn that it is about being able to translate ideas into images , that in the space of time you are given to display your film , every scene or every shot must show all the ideas you are trying to portray in your film , it must express the mood and feeling our your film . in the clip he talked about how taking a simple setting ( the rundown wall and house)and looking at that specific place or object and thinking about what message it sent , what feeling it created , how it would work in ur film and it made me think of even though we may be using a simple setting as a science classroom how we were going to use camera angles and movement combined with lighting to create that mood of suspense or thriller it would almost like being in the room with those characters watching them experiencing what they are feeling, when they are panicking or scared. further on in the clip he talks about a certain area which is full of ambient light which almost brings the street to life andn gives it a certain energy, and how colour can suggest a certain emotion , i linked this into our film and our theme colour of red , the colour red is vast and is such a open colour , there are so many emotions and themes you can link to the colour red but we chose to show the more darker side of red , with the betrayal and secret love or lust also with the revenge and murder, and thats why we talked of how we make our film portray darkeness , and love and aspects a psychological thriller would show, but not deep enough to make it come across as horror , we would use darker lighting and black and white effects Krzysztof Kieslowski says of his film making that it is interesting but hard work. In his trio of scenes, “Three Colours” he uses a key element in each to keep the scenes connected. the lighting we would choose to use would show the emotion of our film.Kieslowski also uses close ups frequently in his work to show the action through the characters eyes. The close up shows what they are concentrating on and what within the scene is important to them.We could use this technique in our film to show the main focuses of Alfie’s world which can also show his revenge. The close up excludes everything surrounding in the scene and brings us into the characters world as we see things from their only their perspective.

short films

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/filmnetwork/A3840266 ( this is link because couldnt find html for it )

i took this short film called almost strangers from the bbc film network site , which had plently of short films that had different genre's. the films title captured me to watch it and when i did i was mostly impressed with the way the director created and used such smart and effective ways of shooting whiles tryin to tell a story. It was one of those films that was showing what happened over a short period of time, well one whole night and how four complete strangers showed different aspects of their lifes. the clip starts of from saturday morning when four people are on a train and then rewinds at a fast pace back to friday evening, this was the first technique i thought created an effect and showed how the time frame was changing , it was almost as if to show where the story ended and then to rewind to show how the story got to that final point, which kind of gave me ideas for when we would come to filming our story. we wanted to include a flashback towards the end of story to show and explain how our story kind of ended at the final point , and i thought of this rewind effect and how maybe we could try and use it when it came to filming . also i noticed in this short film that everytime the time changed , there would be bold text that would appear on the screen to let the audience know what time the scene was taking place at, which i thought was smart and we could use in our story for when our story skips forward to the next day after marie and johnny were trapped in science lab, this technique is common and simple but was useful in this sort of film where time frame was changing all the time. the technique that i think would most useful to our story was during each scene which was showing a aspect of each different characters life , the scene would only show a bit of action for a few seconds and then move onto a different character and what they were doing at that same time and then come back to where it had been left of with the previous character. this form of editing used would be useful for our story when we are showing events during our flashback , almost as the different scene's we would show of alfie watching marie and johnny would skip from one to another and only show brief seconds of each. the end of this short film then skipped back to the present which was the saturday morning on the train , and this helped audience understand why each character was on that train , gave insight into their personalites and explained the story well.

IF NOT NOW , WHEN

I was looking through a site for short films and came across this one which was trying to send a message through the film. after watching the clip twice , it helped give me inspiration on the techniques used and the effect it left the audience with at the end. I noticed that the film alomost made it obivous what the outcome would be but still left suspense on how it would happen and why , it showed events that built up to the final event. This is similar in our story when certain events build up the tension of what may happen until the event takes place , although ours differs by adding in the flashback to show why the final event took place. The technique that i was impressed mostly by that was used in the film was the use of voiceovers this was used at different timed intervals during the film, the voiceovers did not match what was taking place on the screen at the time but almost told u a part of the story without giving it away . i also noticed how every voiceover that was played was said by different characters who would then appear next in the film , as if the voiceover was used as an introduction to the character and the relationship they shared with the main character. this technique gave me few more ideas on how we were going to add maybe a voiceover or newsreport style into our story which would also tell a part of the story and be introduction into our next part of our story.

gossip girl clip : obession

In this clip which is taken from a american tv series gossip girl it demonstrates similar themes in our film such as love, secrets and betrayal. the characters almost replicate the same background and storyline as in our story. The love triangle begins when Chuck likes Blair but she and Nate are dating. Chuck and Blair begin to have an affair, but Blair is still in love with Nate. Which makes Chuck want to do everything in his power to have her. Just like in our story marie and johnny are having an affair even though marie is going out with alfie , this clip not only shares representation with our colour red ,in terms of love and lust but also with our storyline and characters. alfie is similar to chuck but both have different motives , alfie is obessed because he lacks trust within marie , and wants to almost control her whiles chuck (who's character is taken from the clip) is obessed with blair because he wants something he can not have. This clip was able to give me ideas on how to portray alfie's obession in different ways and also how to represent our characters and the personalities.

research

this clip is taken from the american soap desperate housewives , this scene shows when dave (a character that suffers with psychological problems)murders a male character in a store room and lights a fire to hide the evidence. this clip can relate to our story because of the themes such as murder and fire. this character also shares simialarity with alfie because of the motivation that caused them to light the fire was to get revenge. the fire also links in with our colour red.
